"I don't want to feel like this anymore. But I don't know how to change things."

Maybe you’re a parent who’s heard your teen say those words.
Maybe you’re watching them disappear into their pain, not knowing how to reach them.

Maybe you’re a student or young adult who’s been quietly carrying more than anyone knows, wondering if life will ever get easier.

No matter what you try, the pain is still there, and finding a way through can feel impossible.

We’ve seen it before, and we know it can be different.

At Behavioral Care Center of New Jersey, we give teens and young adults the skills to change what feels unchangeable and the support to believe it’s possible.

What Therapy Can Do For Teens & Young Adults

Adolescence and young adulthood are some of the most emotionally intense years of a person’s life. Identity. Relationships. School. The future. The pressure is relentless, and for some teens and young adults, it becomes more than they know how to carry.

What looks like defiance is often fear. What looks like withdrawal is often pain. What looks like not caring is often caring so much it hurts. These aren’t attitude problems. They are signs that a teen or young adult is struggling and doesn’t yet have the tools to cope.

In therapy for teens and young adults at Behavioral Care Center of New Jersey, we use proven, evidence-based approaches, including CBT, DBT, ERP, and Trauma-Focused CBT, to help teens and young adults build emotional skills, reduce suffering, and start moving forward again.

For parents of teens, you’re not on the sidelines either. We help you understand what’s underneath the behavior, reduce conflict at home, and rebuild connections with your child when the relationship has started to fray.
We’ve seen it happen, again and again: The teen who swore they’d never open up, slowly does. The young adult who stopped believing things could get better starts to believe again.

This is what becomes possible with the right support and the right team.

What Therapy for Teens & Young Adults Helps With

Social anxiety, generalized worry, panic attacks, OCD, and college or school refusal can make everyday life feel impossible. We help teens and young adults face fear with proven tools so their world can start to open up again.

When teens or young adults go quiet, stop caring, or can’t seem to find a reason to get out of bed, we help them reconnect with themselves and rebuild a sense of purpose and hope.

When adolescents or young adults are hurting themselves or struggling to want to be here, every moment matters. We provide warm, specialized care for individuals and families navigating these frightening moments and move them back to a sense of hope.

Explosive anger, emotional crashes, impulsivity, and intensity can seem impossible to control. We help teens and young adults develop the skills to regulate from the inside out, using DBT-based approaches.

Whether it’s a single event or years of difficult experiences, trauma shapes how teens and young adults see themselves and the world. Using Trauma-Focused CBT and other approaches, we help them process, heal, and move forward.

Difficulty focusing, managing time, staying organized, and following through doesn’t have to define life. We provide Executive Functioning Coaching and practical tools that work with the way teens’ and young adults’ brains are wired.

The relationship between a struggling teen and their exhausted parent can become a battleground. We help reduce conflict, rebuild trust, and create more cooperation and connection at home.

Starting college, leaving home, changing schools, navigating a breakup, or losing a sense of who they are can be so hard. Our therapists help teens and young adults find their footing again when the ground shifts beneath them.

Academic pressure, social dynamics, family stress, and the relentless noise of modern adolescence and young adulthood can be stressful. We give teens and students tools to manage stress before it becomes a crisis.

When the pushback at home feels constant, and the relationship is breaking down, we help families find a path back to each other with limits, love, and practical tools to use every day.

Approaches We Use in Therapy for Teens & Young Adults

We tailor every treatment plan to age, temperament, and presenting concerns in teens and young adults. Our therapists may use:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps teens and young adults identify the thought patterns fueling their anxiety, depression, and distress and replace them with more accurate, helpful ways of thinking.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) & DBT Groups

DBT is the gold-standard treatment for teens and young adults struggling with intense emotions, self-harm, suicidal ideation, and impulsivity. It provides powerful, skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and building healthier relationships. We offer adherent DBT which includes both individual DBT therapy and DBT skills groups. All DBT clinicians at BCCNJ are intensively trained in DBT and are experts in the treatment.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

The most effective treatment for OCD and anxiety disorders. We help teens gradually and systematically face the fears they’ve been avoiding, breaking the cycle of avoidance and building lasting confidence.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)

A research-based approach that helps teens and young adults process traumatic experiences, reduce trauma symptoms, and rebuild a sense of safety, trust, and well-being in their daily lives.

Executive Functioning Coaching

For teens and young adults struggling with focus, time management, organization, and follow-through ( whether related to ADHD or not), we provide practical, individualized coaching to help them build the systems and skills that make life more manageable.

Questions About Therapy for Teens & Young Adults

Still have questions? Contact Us

Adolescence is hard, and some struggle is a normal part of growing up. But there’s a difference between a rough patch and something that requires professional support.

Support may be needed when your teen’s difficulties are persistent, intensifying, or beginning to interfere with daily life at school, at home, or in their relationships. Signs to take seriously include ongoing depression or hopelessness, self-harm, suicidal ideation, school refusal, significant withdrawal, escalating anxiety, substance use, or emotional explosions that are damaging relationships.

You don’t need to wait until things reach a crisis point. At Behavioral Care Center of New Jersey, we offer a free consultation call to talk through what you’re seeing and help you determine whether therapy is the right next step.

Many teens resist therapy for understandable reasons: It feels like something is wrong with them, they’re afraid of being judged, or they don’t believe anything will help. A skilled teen therapist knows how to ease this resistance, build trust early, and make the first few sessions feel safe rather than clinical.

For families in significant conflict, we can also begin with parent sessions while your teen is not yet ready, giving you strategies to reduce tension at home and create the conditions where your teen becomes more willing to engage. If your teen is refusing, mention it during your consultation. We’ll help you think through the best approach.

Not all therapy is the same and for teens and young adults, the approach matters enormously. The treatments we use, such as CBT, DBT, ERP, and TF-CBT, are among the most rigorously researched and proven approaches available. We don’t just explore feelings. We teach real, practical skills your teen can use in their daily life.

We also specialize in some of the most complex presentations: severe anxiety, OCD, self-harm, suicidality, and emotional dysregulation. If previous therapy hasn’t worked, it may simply be that your teen needed a more specialized approach. That’s what we provide.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is one of the most effective evidence-based treatments available for teens and young adults who struggle with intense emotions, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and impulsivity.

DBT works by teaching four core skill sets: Emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness. Rather than just talking about problems, teens and young adults learn concrete tools they can use in real moments of distress, skills that change how they respond to the hardest parts of their emotional experience.

At Behavioral Care Center of New Jersey, we offer both individual DBT therapy and DBT skills groups. We’ll help you determine the right fit during your initial consultation.

Every teen and young adult is different, and recovery is not a straight line. For those with mild to moderate anxiety, stress, or adjustment challenges, meaningful progress is often seen within 12–20 sessions. For more complex presentations, including trauma, OCD, self-harm, or suicidality, treatment typically takes longer, ranging from 6 months to a year or more.

We set clear goals from the start, track progress regularly, and always aim to help your teen or young adult build the skills they need as efficiently and effectively as possible.

OCD and anxiety in teens respond best to specific approaches, particularly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). Many general therapists are not trained in ERP, which is why finding a specialist matters.

At Behavioral Care Center of New Jersey, our clinicians are trained in both CBT and ERP for adolescents and young adults.

Teen therapy is not the same as adult therapy delivered to a younger person, and it shouldn’t be.

Effective therapy for teens accounts for where they are developmentally: their need for autonomy, their sensitivity to judgment, the central role of peers and identity, and the way that families are still a core part of their emotional world. An experienced teen therapist knows how to build rapport with adolescents who are skeptical, how to involve parents without alienating the teen, and how to adapt evidence-based approaches to fit how a teenage brain works. At Behavioral Care Center of New Jersey, our therapists are specifically trained and experienced in working with adolescents and young adults.

Reaching out for the first time takes courage. We want to make it as straightforward as possible.

At Behavioral Care Center of New Jersey, the first step is a free consultation call. You’ll speak with a member of our team, share a little about what you’re going through, and we’ll help match you with the right therapist for your specific needs.

Executive functioning refers to the mental skills that help us plan, organize, manage time, regulate emotions, and follow through on tasks. When these skills are underdeveloped (whether due to ADHD, anxiety, or other factors), daily life can feel like a constant uphill battle.

For teens and young adults struggling to stay on top of school, college, work, or basic responsibilities, executive functioning coaching provides individualized tools to build the systems and habits that make life more manageable.

Yes. We offer virtual therapy for teens and young adults across 44 states within the U.S., including New Jersey and New York.

Virtual therapy can be a strong fit for this age group, particularly for those navigating school refusal, social anxiety, busy schedules, or the transition to college or independent living. Our team will help you determine the right format during your initial consultation.
